Is the AI video just a preview? Runway CEO believes global models are next

AI-generated video has gone from novelty to creative tool almost overnight, and Runway has a front-row seat to this transformation. The New York-based company has raised nearly $860 million at a valuation of $5.3 billion, and its models compete with the world’s best-funded labs, including Google and OpenAI.

This technology goes beyond just making videos: Runway is now moving toward general global models with applications in games, robotics, and perhaps something closer to general intelligence.

In this episode of TechCrunch’s Equity podcast, host Rebecca Bellan sits down with Cristobal Valenzuela, co-founder and CEO of Runway, to talk about where video production goes from here, and why Runway’s ambitions now reach far beyond Hollywood.

Listen to the full episode to learn about:

  • Why does Valenzuela think that the real constraint on filmmaking was never technology at all, and what changes when that happens?
  • How Runway thinks about global models differently from Google and other labs being built in this area
  • What “non-linear media” means, and why real-time video creation opens up use cases far beyond content creation
  • Why Valenzuela pushes back on the idea that AI companions are ‘inherently miserable’
